Living History at Neziner Hebrew School (& Mishloach Manot)

Cindy 1-13(2)Our Neziner Hebrew School Enrichment children were excited to meet Yehuda Sichel head chef at Abe Fisher Restaurant located at 16th and Sansom Streets.  Yehuda came here to BZBI and prepared a special meal with our 5th and 6th grade enrichment students- from scratch! The meal was Ashkenazi style with an Italian flair, and it was delicious!

Our Hebrew High class was visited by Holocaust survivor, David Tuck. David was born in Poland in 1929 and was just 10 years old when Germany invaded his country. In just a matter of a few months, David was forced to wear an armband and then a yellow Star of David. He was deported to the Lodz Ghetto and eventually he arrived at Auschwitz where he worked in a factory building anti-aircraft guns. In January, 1945 David was deported on a train to Mauthausen in Austria, a brutal 370 mile trip over four days.  To survive, he scooped snow from the ground using a tin cup he tied to his belt and hung out the small window of the cattle car.  When David was liberated, he weighed 78 pounds. He immigrated to the United States in 1950, and he now resides in Levittown, Pennsylvania.

David shared a powerpoint presentation with the students and opened the floor up for questions. The children had lots of questions for David and were brave enough to ask if he would show them his tattoo. He obliged. The students who met David left BZBI that evening with a new appreciation for what freedom really means, and we were all moved by David’s courage to share his story with us.  We are all so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet David and hear his story.

Neziner is grateful to have an active PTA who can help support programs like Yehuda and David’s visit. Once again this year, the Neziner PTA will run their BZBI CommUnity-wide Mishloach Manot project! Through BZBI’s Purim program, you can send a beautiful “basket” to your BZBI friends and family, while supporting BZBI children. Look for the initial email from www.happypurim.com in mid to late January.

For the fourth year, you can send a package to any member, staff, Hebrew school or Early Childhood family. Every family unit sent to will receive one gift basket, along with a list of all the people who participated in their basket. For example, if you are sent a Mishloach Manot package from more than one BZBI individual, you still only receive one basket. Yet all those people sending you the package will be listed on the scroll you receive.

We look forward to your participation and support!
