Youth and Family Education

Our new Jewish educational initiative will be known as Neziner Limudim (Hebrew for “Studies”), highlighting its emphasis on Hebrew language skills and Jewish experiences. This After School Program for Kindergarten-7th Graders will offer 2 different paths that will address the needs that parents shared with us.

NEZINER LIMUDIM:

Path 1: ULPAN

Reinforced Hebrew-Language Learning Opportunity 

  • two days a week attendance to reinforce language practice

Monday: focus on Hebrew and Prayer

Wednesday: focus on foundations of Jewish living, together with Garinim participants

Path 2: GARINIM (Hebrew for “Seeds”)

Foundational Judaic Topics Plant the Seeds for Lifelong Learning

  • 1 day a week attendance to ease family scheduling

Wednesday: basic Hebrew instruction and Judaics focus: Torah stories, holidays, history of Israel, etc.

Neziner Limudim families are strongly encouraged to participate in Shabbat No’ar.

Neziner Limudim Fees: 

Ulpan K-7: Monday and Wednesday

  • $1800 (Members)
  • $2250 (Non-Members)

Garinim K-7: Wednesday

  • $1,200 (Members)
  • $1,500 (Non-Members)

3:00-3:20: Chaperoned Pickup and Walk from Schools and Bus Stops within a distance of 0.8 miles and with a minimum 5 students

3:20-4:00: Snack and Homework Help – Pre-Care Drop-Off between 3:20-4:00 available

4:05-4:15: Check-In / Social Emotional Activity while Students are Still Arriving

4:15-5:00: Hebrew Movement Activities/Games

5:00-5:10: Break

5:10-5:40: Hebrew Prayer-Based Learning (Decoding, Reading Instruction)

5:40-6:00: Ulpan-Wide Havdalah to Welcome the New Week before Dismissal

**Sample Wednesday: Ulpan + Garinim

5:00-5:10: Break

5:10-5:40: Experiential Learning: Jewish Holidays, Torah Stories, History of Israel, Jewish Values, etc.

5:40-6:00: Weekly Themed Community-Building Activity

SHABBAT NO’AR:

Tot Shabbat and Bonim (PreK): we will continue to offer first-rate Shabbat experiences, including:

  • Play-based learning

  • Shabbat-friendly crafts

  • Torah-Based and Jewish Folk Stories

  • Developmentally-appropriate Shabbat Services

Shabbat Bonim – PreK 

  • $360 Suggested Donation

NEW: Shabbat No’ar – Shabbat Community for all Kindergarten-7th Graders 

10:00-10:30: Open hang-out, card/board games that can be completed within this time frame

10:30-11:00: Ḥuggim / electives such as: Parshat HaShavua (Drama/Skits, Chevruta and/or Group Discussion) Book Club, Beit Cafe Ivrit – Modern Hebrew, and more

11:00-11:15: Kiddush

11:15-11:45: Tefillah in Age-Appropriate Groups – Peer Led by 7th Graders and Teens

11:45-12:00: Join parents in Sanctuary, open group call to lead Ein Keloheinu, Aleinu, Adon Olam

12:00-12:15: Dismissed from Sanctuary to join Kiddush Lunch in the Kahaner

Monthly Special Activities: 

  • Tefillah for parents and kids together – 7th Graders will help lead these family services

  • Parent discussion facilitated by various Rabbis, educators or parents

  • Teen Minyan

Shabbat No’ar K-7

Mercaz – Jewish Philly Teens 

Supported by the Weinberg Foundation Grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia

BZBI Teen Coordinator, Larry Kaplan, leads this initiative to engage Jewish teens in Center City – regardless of institutional affiliation – to gather as a robust Jewish teen community and become effective Jewish leaders through:

  • Social Activism and Mitzvah Projects
  • Leadership Training
  • Jewish Educational Opportunities (Including what was “Hebrew High”)
  • Engaging Speakers
  • Field Trips and Travel Opportunities

Programs will most likely take place alternating between Wednesday evenings and Sunday afternoons.

Additional BZBI Teen Programs will include:

  • Moving Traditions Rosh Hodesh and Shevet Achim Groups
  • Teen Beit Midrash (7th-12th Grade) – Mondays 4:00-6:00 with Rabbi Abe, followed by Minyan
  • Torah Academy Jr. to Prepare Teens to Read Torah, Haftorah, and Megillot and Write/Deliver Divrei Torah
  • Teen Minyan on Shabbat
  • Brit Mitzvah Cohort
