Spring is Hatching in our BZBI Pre-K!

April 6, 2016

FarmerJohnEvery year, during springtime, the school participates in an egg hatching project from Quiver Farm. This year “Farmer John” introduced us to Pearl the mother hen and Harold the father rooster. The children learned that Pearl’s job is to the turn the eggs, up to 90 times a day, and to keep the chick’s home clean. Harold’s job is to defend and protect his family, which is why he has his own personal alarm…Cock-a- doddle doo!

shoshichickThe Pre-K children were given specific instruction on how they will assist Farmer John in being farmers during the next two weeks.  They will be given the responsibility of ensuring the eggs are turned 3 times per day; the temperature in the incubator is 100 degrees; and that there is water in the bottom of the incubator to help keep the egg shells soft.  After the eggs hatch, the baby chicks will remain in the incubator until they are completely dry.  The chicks will make their home in the brooder box where they will have clean bedding, water and food.

roosterAll of the children in the school will visit the Pre-K classroom and learn about the eggs and the hatching of the chicks.  Some classes may even make predictions of which eggs will hatch first.  Be sure to ask any of our students how the chicks are doing!
