Most of us are/descend from immigrants…and refugees. Speak up for refugees, by writing a postcard to our Congressional Representatives (and a call couldn’t hurt!)
For more than 2.8 million people forced to flee Ukraine, legal refugee status in the US (and resettlement) requires completing a multi-year security vetting process before being permitted to board a plane to the US.
The only other legal pathways are a family petition by a US resident of a Lautenberg Amendment petition. Both of these processes can take up to several years. Ukrainians need safety NOW.
*The Lautenberg Amendment of 1990 facilitated resettlement of Jews from the former Soviet Union, allowing HIAS to bring tens of thousands to safety. The
Amendment has since expanded to all persecuted religious minorities, but it requires yearly re-authorization and has not yet been renewed for 2022.
