The novel tells the story of Shmuel Meir Lichtbencher, the last heir of a fictional Polish Hasidic dynasty, who flees the Holocaust to Mississippi and eventually New York City, where he becomes a musician playing blues alongside Black musicians. The book explores themes of faith, identity, and cross-cultural connections between Jewish and Black communities.
