Mazel Tov, Max!

February 19, 2020

The Shandler Family is proud to celebrate Max as he is called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah this Saturday morning. Max is excited to share this momentous occasion with the BZBI community and is grateful to all of his teachers and friends for the 13 years of support leading to this day. As part of his Bar Mitzvah project, Max is working with the Philadelphia Holocaust Remembrance Foundation as a young ambassador for Holocaust education to help combat antisemitism and hate.

Max has a special Torah portion this Shabbat, Parashah Mishpatim. Also known as Shabbat Shekalim, it is read in preparation for Purim.  When the Temple was standing, each adult male Jew contributes half of a shekel for its upkeep as required by the Torah. According to the Talmud, Haman’s decree was averted in merit of the mitzvah of all Jews making their donation. Torah readers include Richard Eden and Margaret Musleah. A Because We Care Mitzvah Food Basket is sponsored by Max’s grandparents, Gabriela Altman and Phyllis & Harvey Shandler in honor of Max becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Kiddush is sponsored by Rebecca and Scott Shandler in honor of their son Max being called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah.
