Learn about the poetry of Nathan Alterman through a new bilingual anthology of his poems, The Mirror of the Times, a project spearheaded by Dr. Rachel Korazim with the Vice Chair of the World Zionist Organization, Dr. Yizhar Hess. Many of the poems are available in English for the first time.
As a journalist, labor leader, and poet, Nathan Alterman was a prominent figure both before and after Israel’s statehood. Once a week for 24 years, he published columns in verse about political, social, and moral challenges of his day in the Histadrut daily paper Davar. One of the central voices of modern Hebrew poetry, Alterman wrote in response to the political and moral challenges of his time, combining sharp critique with a deep commitment to Israel.
Dr. Rachel Korazim is a leading Jewish educator and internationally renowned teacher of Israeli literature, known for bringing Hebrew poetry to life for diverse audiences around the world.
Through selected poems, Rachel and Yizhar will explore Alterman’s questions about Israel, responsibility, and the role of a moral voice in times of crisis and how these questions continue to resonate in Israel today.
