SICHA: Next Generation Judaism – Beyond the Campus

Rabbi Mike Uram in Conversation with Philadelphia Jewish Community Leaders

January 10 2018, 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

In his recent book Next Generation Judaism, Rabbi Mike Uram, Executive Director of Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania, shares insights into the future direction of American Judaism gained from years of work with college students. What can the rest of us learn from these young Jews? Join Barbara Hirsh (Director of the Department of Jewish Life and Learning at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia), Rabbi Abe Friedman, and Rabbi Joel Seltzer (Executive Director, Camp Ramah in the Poconos) in conversation with Rabbi Uram about how we might apply his ideas to Jewish communities beyond the college campus.

Stay after the conversation for a light dessert reception and book signing. The book will be available for purchase at the event for $18.00 and retails for $19.99.

Rabbi Mike Uram is the Executive Director and Campus Rabbi for the Hillel at University of Pennsylvania and the author of the new book entitled, Next Generation Judaism:  How College Students and Hillel Can Help Reinvent Jewish Organizations, which won a 2016 National Jewish Book Award.

Mike is speaker, consultant, and scholar-in-residence to non-profit organizations all over the country and he currently serves as lead faculty and Jewish coach for the Schusterman Fellowship, a leadership development program for the most promising talent in the Jewish professional sector.

Mike recently won the Edgar Bronfman Award that recognizes outstanding achievement and leadership within the Hillel movement.  In 2012, Mike was named to the Forward list of the 50 most influential leaders that year.  In the spring of 2012, Mike received the Ally of the Year award from AIPAC for his campus work during the Penn BDS Conference.  In the winter of 2007, Mike received Hillel’s highest award for professional achievement, the Richard M. Joel Exemplar of Excellence.

Mike helped to create a Jewish engagement ‘start-up’ called the Jewish Renaissance Project (JRP) that reaches thousands of students on the Jewish periphery with cutting-edge methods for building alternative Jewish communities and delivering content-rich Jewish experiences.  JRP was recently included in the 2014-2015 Slingshot guide for most innovative Jewish organizations in North America.

Mike holds a BA in History and Religious Studies from Washington University and Rabbinic Ordination from the Jewish Theological Seminary.  He lives outside Philadelphia with his wife Leora and their children Avital, Benjamin and Coby.

Barbara Hirsh is a sociologist and current Director of the Department of Jewish Life and Learning at the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia.  Prior to that, she served as the Dean of Academic Administration and Director of Campus Chaplaincy Training at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College.  Barbara had earlier served as the Associate Director of Hillel of Greater Philadelphia.  Her volunteer work has included serving on the board of the Lower Merion Library System and as Board Chair of Shalva, an organization devoted to addressing domestic violence in the Jewish community.

Rabbi Joel Seltzer is originally from Philadelphia, PA and he himself is a home-grown product of Camp Ramah in the Poconos. Whether as a camper, a counselor, a Rosh Edah  (Division Head), or Rosh Drama  (Head of Performing Arts), Rabbi Joel learned countless personal and professional life lessons from his time at camp. A graduate of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Rabbi Joel served as a rabbi at Temple Emanu-El in Providence, RI for four years before returning to his spiritual home: Camp Ramah. Rabbi Joel lives in Philadelphia with his wife Eliana  (whom he met at Camp!), and their daughters Ayelet, Talia, and Noa.

Rabbi Abe Friedman is the Senior Rabbi at BZBI.
