Promoting Democracy in Israel

October 17 2018, 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Israel was founded to be both a Jewish homeland and a democracy that promised equality to all. But, as Americans know from firsthand experience, democratic institutions can be threatened by democratically-elected governments. Recent developments – like the passage of the Nation-State Law, the arrest of a Conservative rabbi who conducted a wedding ceremony, and the political interrogations liberal activists can face when arriving at the airport – show that, in Israel too, democracy cannot be taken for granted.

Come learn about the Israelis who struggle tirelessly on behalf of democracy and equality. Mickey Gitzin, the Israel Executive Director of the New Israel Fund will share insights from NIF’s work to help Israel fulfill its founders’ values, enshrined in the Declaration of Independence, to “ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex.”

RSVP for this event through NIF’s website.

Mickey Gitzin is the Director of the New Israel Fund in Israel. Mickey also serves as a city council member in Tel Aviv-Jaffa, where he chairs committees for diversity and public housing. He is also the Mayor’s advisor for global development and innovation.

Prior to joining NIF, Mickey was the founding director of “Israel Hofsheet” (Be Free Israel), a leading grassroots organization fighting for separation of religion and state in Israel. Previously, Mickey was the spokesperson for MK Ilan Gilon (Meretz) and the Associate Director of “Festival BeShekel,” an organization advancing arts and culture in Israel’s geographic and socioeconomic periphery. After completing his military service as an intelligence officer, he served as a shaliach (emissary) in South Bend, Indiana for the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Mickey holds a Master’s in Public Policy from University College-London, for which he received a Chevening Scholarship from the British Foreign Office and the British Council.

The New Israel Fund is the leading organization advancing and defending democracy in Israel. Widely credited with building Israeli progressive civil society, NIF has provided hundreds of millions of dollars to Israel since its inception in 1979.
