This summer marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Six Day War and the reunification of Jerusalem, a week that reshaped the Middle East and whose ramifications continue to unfold in today’s headlines. To mark and reflect upon this milestone, BZBI will be holding a Pop-Up Book Club, three discussions focused on three important books about the Six Day War.
For our first meeting, after kiddush on Saturday, March 18 after Kiddush, we will discuss Like Dreamers: The Story of the Israeli Paratroopers who Reunited Jerusalem and Divided a Nation by Yossi Klein Halevi. Halevi follows the men of the 55th Paratroopers Reserve Brigade through the narrow streets of the Old City and throughout the following decades as the soldiers mature and found influential movements on Israel’s right and left – ultimately facing off over questions of peace, land, and the future of the Jewish homeland.
In order to provide a rich discussion for all, we request that participants read at least chapters 5-6, 16-17, and 19 in advance of the book club meeting.
This series is sponsored by the Israel Engagement Committee.
