Anti-Racism Movie Club: Thirteenth

March 22 2021, 6:30 PM - 8:00 PM

Instead of a book in March, we will discuss the documentary 13th on Netflix. This piercing, Oscar-nominated film from Ava DuVernay won Best Documentary at the Emmys, BAFTAs and NAACP Image Awards.

Named after the United States Constitution’s 13th Amendment, this documentary examines the history of slavery in the US, the impact of systemic racism on Black and African American people, and the resulting Civil Rights Movement. Scholars, activists and politicians discuss how we’ve ended up: with the criminalization of African Americans and the U.S. prison boom.

Register for this thought-provoking discussion here.

We hope you are able to watch it before the meeting. Alternately, we can stream the movie on Zoom if you don’t have a Netflix account or would like to watch as a group.  Send a note to Feedback@bzbi.org to let us know if you want to join us for a watch party.
