SUMMARY:ScholarStream
DESCRIPTION:Once again\, BZBI is sponsoring ScholarStream\, a collaboration of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS)\, Rabbinical Assembly (RA)\, the Schechter Institutes and Ziegler\, in which teachers representing each institution will examine some of Judaism’s key ideas\, moments\, and challenges. This year ScholarStream is divided into eight series of lectures\, spanning October 2021 to May 2022. \nTo join the classes\, click on this registration link\nYou can register for each series of three or four classes at $10 per series. Register using the link above and you will receive an immediate acknowledgement.  You will be sent the Zoom link for each series in an email about a week before the start\, and again on the morning of each session. The deadline to register for a given session is one day before the session. \nScholarStream Series 1 -5 have been completed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeries #6\, The Power of the Prophets\, will be presented on Tuesdays\, March 22\, 29 and April 5\, 12 at 8:00 PM. \n \n\n\nMarch 22: Rabbi Bradley Artson\, Dean of the Zeigler College of Rabbinic Studies and Vice President of American Jewish University\, discusses Jonah: A Prophet Who Failed His Way to Success. What makes a true prophet? According to the Torah\, one whose prophecy comes to pass. But if that’s so\, what happens when people do teshuvah (repent) and avert the evil decree? Does that make the prophet a fraud? Jonah thought so\, and insisted on strict truth instead of compassion. Let’s dive into a fishy exploration of truth and justice vs. compassion and repentance in one of the Bible’s best stories!\nMarch 29: Rabbi Ernesto Yattah of Seminario Rabinico discusses A Focus on Amos. What makes the prophet Amos such an inspiring Biblical figure? Using Abraham Joshua Heschel’s The Prophets\, we will explore Amos within the context of his contemporaries\, his experiences\, and his prophecies.\nApril 5: Professor Ben Sommer of JTS on Debate among the Prophets: Isaiah vs. Jeremiah. How did Isaiah and Jeremiah differ on their views of the Temple and Jerusalem?  What does their disagreement teach us about prophecy\, and about Jewish tradition more generally?\nApril 12: Bex Stern Rosenblatt of Conservative Yeshiva on “My Eyes are Finished by Tears” – Resilience and Lament. How do we keep on going when the unthinkable happens? We will do a close reading of selections from the Book of Lamentations to illuminate some of the possible answers to this question.\n\n\n\n\nRemaining Series: \n\nSeries #7: Liturgy of Miracles – Hanukkah\, Purim\, and Yom Haatzmaut\, Tuesdays\, May 3\, 10\, 17 & 24 at 8:00 PM\nSeries #8: Israel – Models of Resilience\, Wednesdays\, May 11\, 18\, 25 and June 1 at 1:00 PM

SUMMARY:BZBI Panel Discussion: Retirement Minimum Distributions
DESCRIPTION:The rules for taking retirement plan distributions can be complicated for taking Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from your IRA\, SIMPLE IRA\, SEP IRA\, or retirement plan account when you reach age 70½. Much like Talmudic study\, understanding the rules for calculating RMD\, the timeframe for withdrawals\, and the taxes due on proceeds are subject to detailed discussion and analysis. \nA panel of BZBI members\, including Les Robbins\, Sheldon Bernick\, Terry Hirshorn\, and Matt Whitehorn will discuss one slice of this equation: the tax benefits of receiving qualified charitable distributions from IRAs and donating them to a charity\, especially BZBI. \n\nThis event is geared towards those who are 70+ and is sponsored by The Men’s Club. There is no charge for the event\, although contributions are welcome. Submit your questions in advance here.\n \nRegister for the event here\n \n \n \n

SUMMARY:Towards Equality for Arabs and Jews in Israel with the New Israel Fund
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an interactive in-person and virtual discussion with the Arab and Jewish Co-Executive Directors of NIF grantee Sikkuy-Aufoq. Amjad Shbita and Ofer Dagan\, in conversation with NIF’s Vice President for Public Engagement (and Philadelphia native) Libby Lenkinski\, will share details of their work to create an inclusive Israel. Their goal is to foster a society in which Palestinian Arab citizens are incorporated fully in government\, private sector\, academia\, and daily life without compromising their cultural identity and belonging. They will also highlight their successful advocacy to secure unprecedented funding from the Israeli government to advance integration of Arab citizens into the Israeli economy\, their work to restitch the fabric of Jewish-Arab relations that was torn during the intercommunal violence of May 2021\, and their work to ensure that Palestinian Arab culture and identity are recognized within the Israeli public sphere. \nNIF’s grant to Sikkuy-Aufoq is for a specific program to achieve fair media coverage of Arab society and to acquaint Hebrew speakers with Arab experts and public figures. The goal is to normalize the presence of Palestinians on television and in electronic media as one way to increase their acceptance by Jewish citizens. \n  \nABOUT AMJAD SHBITA: \nAmjad Shbita is a political and social activist\, appointed Co-Executive Director of Sikkuy-Aufoq in March 2019\, after working with the organization for seven years. SUMMARY:BZBI Day at JRA!
DESCRIPTION:JRA is excited to welcome the BZBI community to join us for volunteering day on Sunday\, May 15. JRA delivers food and essential household items to around 3\,400 households monthly. JRA’s serves a diverse population of low-income individuals and families who are struggling with food insecurity. Volunteers help at the JRA warehouse by packing boxes and bags of food and delivering them to JRA’s recipient households. \nThe Jewish Relief Agency Warehouse is located at 10980 Dutton Road. Philadelphia\, PA 19154. For directions\, call or text: 610-660-0190. \nClick Here to Reserve Your Spot \n9:00 – 10:00 AM – For our youngest community members\, JRA Juniors is our program for kids under 12 and their families\, who join us at the warehouse. The families pack at a kid-friendly pace down our assembly-line-style lines\, packing boxes of pantry staples\, produce\, and household supplies into boxes using push-carts. This is a great atmosphere for JRA’s littlest volunteers\, suitable for preschool and early elementary school-aged children and their families. \n10:00 – 11:30 AM – Volunteers of all ages are invited to join in on All-Ages Packing\, to pack boxes of food and household items. The JRA warehouse operates in an assembly-line style\, and volunteers will carry boxes down the lines\, while other volunteers pass out items to be placed in each box. There are several different roles that volunteers can take on in the warehouse\, depending on their ability level\, and volunteers of all ages are encouraged to participate! \n11:30 AM (10:00 AM for JRA Juniors) – After packing\, the BZBI crew will depart from the JRA warehouse to deliver the food they just packed to community members living in Federation Housing in the Northeast! Families who are delivering will pull into the JRA warehouse driveway and stop by the tent to check in with a JRA staff person. That staff member will greet them\, provide them with instructions for delivery\, and give them their delivery information. Then\, the volunteers will drive to the back of the warehouse where JRA volunteers pack their cars with the necessary number of boxes for their delivery route. The families will drive to the apartment building where they are delivering\, and can meet in the parking lot to coordinate delivery! \nPrepare in advance by writing JRA Caring Cards (optional): \n \n
