Yet even after having sat beside thousands of deathbeds\, Steve Leder the rabbi was not fully prepared for the loss of his own father. It was only then that Steve Leder the son truly learned how loss makes life beautiful by giving it meaning and touching us with love that we had not felt before. \nGwen Freedman has graciously volunteered to lead the discussion. DESCRIPTION:BZBI is working with the the city and the Philadelphia Horticultural Society (PHS) to plant a Honey Locust ’street keeper\,’ tree which will provide beauty and shade to our congregation and community L’dor v’dor – for generations to come. The tree planting will take place on Sunday\, November 21 at 10:00 AM. You can see white paint marking on 18th Street where pavement will be removed for the tree. \nPHS requires that all volunteers create an account and register via VolunteerHub. All volunteers eligible for the Covid-19 vaccine must be fully vaccinated. Volunteers will need to upload proof of vaccination when they register. DESCRIPTION:Rabbi Yitzhak Hutner (1906-1980)\, a leader of America’s Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) community\, was also one of the most original and challenging thinkers in Jewish history. His writings\, which he collected under the heading of hilkhot de’ot ve-hovot ha-levavot (Character Paths and the Heart’s Commitments)\, use the Jewish holidays as a framework for understanding the deeper levels of Jewish spiritual experience. Join Rabbi Abe as we dive into Rav Hutner’s teachings on Pesah. English translation will be offered for all texts and no prior experience is required. \nThe initial five week class will take place on five Wednesdays\, February 2 – March 9 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, February 5\, BZBI will host David Marcu\, Senior CEO of Israel Elwyn for Disability Awareness Shabbat. \nIsrael Elwyn (IE) is an Israeli nonprofit that provides services and programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They see a society in which individuals with disabilities are citizens with equal rights; a society in which we all determine our own future and way of life. \nEstablished in 1984\, IE operates in collaboration with and supported by the Ministry of Welfare and Social Affairs; Ministry of Education; Ministry of Health; and local municipalities nationwide. They provide a wide range of innovative programs to more than 5\,200 individuals with disabilities including toddlers\, children\, teenagers\, young people\, adults and seniors. \nDavid Marcu is IE’s Senior Chief Executive Officer and holds an M.B.A. in Business Administration from Temple University\, M.A. in Talmud and Rabbinics from The Jewish Theological Seminary\, and B.A. in Near Eastern and Judaic Studies from Brandeis University. There is no charge for this class\, and we would appreciate your feedback here.\n\n\n\nGary Schapiro has been studying\, practicing\, and teaching mindfulness meditation for 45 years.  He spent 14 years mentoring mindfulness groups in Massachusetts prisons.  Within that community\, he also taught a mindfulness-based emotional intelligence curriculum created by the Prison Mindfulness Institute entitled “Path of Freedom.”  Gary spent 12 years teaching mindfulness to clients and staff at Boston’s Pine Street Inn\, one of the nation’s largest social service agencies\, serving the homeless\, people dealing with substance abuse and\, in general\, society’s underserved.  He is currently facilitating an online mindfulness class for fellow long-time meditation practitioners.\n

DESCRIPTION:This Shabbat\, we welcome Cathryn Miller-Wilson\, Executive Director of HIAS Pennsylvania\, for a discussion of the situation in Ukraine. She will discuss the implications of the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security’s announcement that Temporary Protected Status is available for Ukrainians effective on March 3\, 2022. \nHIAS Pennsylvania supports low-income immigrants of all backgrounds as they build new lives in our community. Through immigration legal services and an array of social services\, we work to address their needs\, defend their rights\, and advocate for their equitable inclusion in American society. For more information and to donate\, click here. \nCathryn has been Executive Director since November 2016. Her prior experience includes roles as Visiting Assistant Professor at Villanova University School of Law where she co-taught the Civil Justice Clinic -Legal Writing. From September 2008 through June 2011. She has also been Deputy Managing Attorney at the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania and an adjunct professor at Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law. \nShe is the primary author of Pennsylvania’s Standby Guardianship Act which became law in December 1998. With support from the Drexel University Earle Mack School of Law\, she created a medical/legal partnership between the AIDS Law Project of Pennsylvania and the Jonathan Lax Treatment Center at Philadelphia FIGHT in 2007. Cathryn graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School and currently sits on the law school’s Board of Managers. In 2004 she was awarded the Penn Law Alumni Society’s Young Alumni Award for Professional Achievement.

DESCRIPTION:Once again\, BZBI is sponsoring ScholarStream\, a collaboration of the Jewish Theological Seminary (JTS)\, Rabbinical Assembly (RA)\, the Schechter Institutes and Ziegler\, in which teachers representing each institution will examine some of Judaism’s key ideas\, moments\, and challenges. This year ScholarStream is divided into eight series of lectures\, spanning October 2021 to May 2022. \nTo join the classes\, click on this registration link\nYou can register for each series of three or four classes at $10 per series. Register using the link above and you will receive an immediate acknowledgement.  You will be sent the Zoom link for each series in an email about a week before the start\, and again on the morning of each session. The deadline to register for a given session is one day before the session. \nScholarStream Series 1 -5 have been completed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeries #6\, The Power of the Prophets\, will be presented on Tuesdays\, March 22\, 29 and April 5\, 12 at 8:00 PM. \n \n\n\nMarch 22: Rabbi Bradley Artson\, Dean of the Zeigler College of Rabbinic Studies and Vice President of American Jewish University\, discusses Jonah: A Prophet Who Failed His Way to Success. What makes a true prophet? According to the Torah\, one whose prophecy comes to pass. But if that’s so\, what happens when people do teshuvah (repent) and avert the evil decree? Does that make the prophet a fraud? Jonah thought so\, and insisted on strict truth instead of compassion. Let’s dive into a fishy exploration of truth and justice vs. compassion and repentance in one of the Bible’s best stories!\nMarch 29: Rabbi Ernesto Yattah of Seminario Rabinico discusses A Focus on Amos. What makes the prophet Amos such an inspiring Biblical figure? Using Abraham Joshua Heschel’s The Prophets\, we will explore Amos within the context of his contemporaries\, his experiences\, and his prophecies.\nApril 5: Professor Ben Sommer of JTS on Debate among the Prophets: Isaiah vs. Jeremiah. How did Isaiah and Jeremiah differ on their views of the Temple and Jerusalem?  What does their disagreement teach us about prophecy\, and about Jewish tradition more generally?\nApril 12: Bex Stern Rosenblatt of Conservative Yeshiva on “My Eyes are Finished by Tears” – Resilience and Lament. How do we keep on going when the unthinkable happens? DESCRIPTION:Artist-in-Residence Eliana Light\nFrom Wednesday\, March 23 to Saturday evening\, March 26\, Eliana Light returns for her final 2021-2022 Artist-in-Residence weekend with meaningful music\, powerful prayer\, and thought-provoking education. Her intent is to help each of us discover the depth and richness of Jewish life within and take ownership of our Judaism. She will draw from her two albums of original Jewish music\, her Hebrew in Harmony curriculum\, and elements of the G!D Project\, focused on accessible and creative conversations about spirituality. \nThe weekend will include a musical Kabbalat Shabbat service\, presentations to Hebrew School students\, and multiple opportunities to engage in musical and spiritual growth. \nThe Artist-in-Residence program is sponsored by BZBI Sisterhood; Neziner Hebrew School; Youth & Family PTA; Penny and Sheldon Bernick; Melissa Lerman and Eric Berger; Anne and J.D. SUMMARY:Building Bridges Through Music with Polyphony
DESCRIPTION:Polyphony joins with co-sponsors BZBI and ARTolerance to offer you an evening of Common Ground Through Common Sound with the Polyphony String Quartet plus members of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Ensemble from Sanctuary Choir at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church.\n  \nPolyphony bridges the divide between Arab and Jewish communities in Israel through classical music and serves as a worldwide model for cooperation based on cultural exchange\, dialogue\, and partnership.\n  \nThe concert program includes Schubert String Quartet No 13\, two movements from the Mendelssohn String Octet\, and other masterpieces. Location: Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church\, 625 Montgomery Avenue\, Bryn Mawr\, PA 19010.
