DESCRIPTION:Weekly on Monday’s\, Starting October 20 at 10:00 AM on Zoom \nWe will be studying the first chapter of the Talmudic Tractate Pesachim in our weekly Talmud class this year. While the opening topic of the chapter reviews the laws of Bedikat Hametz\, the search for the Hametz just prior to Pesach\, as is the nature of the Talmudic text\, subjects can run far a field as we follow the inimical associative reasoning of the sages. \nClick here to register.  \nA zoom link will be distributed ahead of the first class meeting after participants have registered. The cost is $180 for BZBI members and $250 for community members.

DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to invite the entire BZBI family to save the date for First Friday Dinners! \nThis year\, there are three main items to note: \n\n\nALL of the dinners will be catered by BZBI’s preferred partner\, Panache by Foodarama\, Panache serves a variety of delicious food options and always sends more than we need\, fulfilling the Jewish truism that “if there aren’t leftovers\, you didn’t make enough food.” \n\n\nThere will only be ONE dinner each month – Kabbalat Shabbat will take place at 6:00 PM\, followed by dinner at 7:15 PM. SUMMARY:BZBI Author Event: The Roots of the Guava Tree by Sonia Daccarett
DESCRIPTION:This debut memoir tells the story of a young girl’s struggle to understand her identity as the daughter of a Jewish mother and a Christian Palestinian father\, as she was coming of age in Colombia where increasing violence and the instability of the 1980s were engulfing her country.\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments will be served at 6:45 PM. Author interview and discussion moderated by Nancy Leaderman. Books will be available for purchase. Attendance is free\, but registration is requested for refreshment headcount and room setup.\n\n\n\n\nThe author grew up with a Jewish mother and a Christian Palestinian father in Colombia during the 1980s. When she asks her parents questions about their family’s ethnicity and religion they answer evasively\, defining their family religion and ethnicity as “nothing.” This coming-of-age memoir tells the story of her struggle to understand her identity\, as the violence of the drug wars escalates in Colombia and her parents’ marriage is rocked by the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSonia Daccarett is a writer and communications professional. Having worked on strategic communications with corporate and non-profit clients for more than two decades\, The Roots of the Guava Tree is her debut memoir.  Sonia now writes and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where she is a member of Congregation Beth Sholom (where BZBI-raised Amanda Russell is her rabbi).
