SUMMARY:Wine & Cheese (and a Little Whiskey?) - Kashrut with Rabbi Abe
DESCRIPTION:When we think of kashrut\, we often think first of meat & milk\, shellfish\, and other “forbidden foods.” Wine and cheese present special cases in the development of kashrut; they offer a window into how the system operates and how halakhah (Jewish practice) evolves over time. We will study sources in chronological order\, culminating with a careful study of how Conservative rabbis today approach questions of Jewish practice. \nThis course is open to students of all backgrounds. Students in this course will meet independently in hevruta pairs to study primary sources (in Hebrew and English translation) and then join in a full group discussion once each week. You are welcome to register together with your hevruta (study partner)\, or register separately and hevruta partners will be matched at the first class meeting. \nThis class requires a separate registration\, and you can register here. The cost for this class is $36 for BZBI members and $50 for the community. We will send an invoice after the second class.  Questions? Send a note through our Contact Us form.

SUMMARY:BZBI-wide Book Club: Upcoming Events
DESCRIPTION:The Book Club is pleased to announce their next book for discussion!  Register once here\, and attend any or all upcoming events.\n \n———- \nApeirogon by Colum McCann\, to be reviewed by Sharon Greis on August 16\, 2021  \n \nBassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their daily lives\, from the roads they are allowed to drive on\, to the schools their daughters\, Abir and Smadar\, each attend\, to the checkpoints\, both physical and emotional\, they must negotiate. \nTheir worlds shift irreparably after ten-year-old Abir is killed by a rubber bullet and thirteen-year-old Smadar becomes the victim of suicide bombers. When Bassam and Rami learn of each other’s stories\, they recognize the loss that connects them and they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace. \nMcCann crafts Apeirogon out of a universe of fictional and nonfictionalasl material. He crosses centuries and continents\, stitching together time\, art\, history\, nature\, and politics in a tale both heartbreaking and hopeful.

SUMMARY:BZBI-wide Book Club: The Beauty of What Remains
DESCRIPTION:Our post-High Holiday book will be The Beauty of What Remains by Steven Leder. The author is a rabbi at Wilshire Temple in Los Angeles and may join us for the meeting. \nThis inspiring and comforting book takes us on a journey through the experience of loss that is fundamental to everyone. Yet even after having sat beside thousands of deathbeds\, Steve Leder the rabbi was not fully prepared for the loss of his own father. It was only then that Steve Leder the son truly learned how loss makes life beautiful by giving it meaning and touching us with love that we had not felt before. \nGwen Freedman has graciously volunteered to lead the discussion. The book is available at the Free Library. We have scheduled the review for Monday\, October 18\, at 7 pm. At this point\, we are not sure whether it will be multiple access [in person plus zoom] or just via zoom. \nRegister Here
