SUMMARY:Whatever Exists\, Exists in God: A Contemporary Jewish Encounter with Spinoza’s Ethics led by Rabbi Ira F. Stone
DESCRIPTION:A brief introduction to the work of one of the greatest Jewish philosophers whose work caused his excommunication from the Jewish community 500 years ago.. a ban that is theoretically still in force. But Spinoza’s worldview is one that may be much more compelling to contemporary Jews. In fact\, it may serve as a firmer basis for religious affiliation and practice than more traditional frameworks do for many. We will explore the basic outline of his thought and its potential applications for today. \nThere are four sessions within the course\, each costing $25 ($100 for the full four weeks). Click here to register!

SUMMARY:BZBI Author Event: The Roots of the Guava Tree by Sonia Daccarett
DESCRIPTION:This debut memoir tells the story of a young girl’s struggle to understand her identity as the daughter of a Jewish mother and a Christian Palestinian father\, as she was coming of age in Colombia where increasing violence and the instability of the 1980s were engulfing her country.\n\n\n\n\nRefreshments will be served at 6:45 PM. Author interview and discussion moderated by Nancy Leaderman. Books will be available for purchase. Attendance is free\, but registration is requested for refreshment headcount and room setup.\n\n\n\n\nThe author grew up with a Jewish mother and a Christian Palestinian father in Colombia during the 1980s. When she asks her parents questions about their family’s ethnicity and religion they answer evasively\, defining their family religion and ethnicity as “nothing.” This coming-of-age memoir tells the story of her struggle to understand her identity\, as the violence of the drug wars escalates in Colombia and her parents’ marriage is rocked by the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSonia Daccarett is a writer and communications professional. Having worked on strategic communications with corporate and non-profit clients for more than two decades\, The Roots of the Guava Tree is her debut memoir.  Sonia now writes and lives in the San Francisco Bay Area\, where she is a member of Congregation Beth Sholom (where BZBI-raised Amanda Russell is her rabbi).

SUMMARY:Israel Goes to the Polls: A Conversation at BZBI with Dr. Shira Hebel Sela and Honorable Ramy Djerassi
DESCRIPTION:This month\, for the first time in four years\, Israelis will go to the polls. Come to BZBI on Monday\, October 19\, to learn about that upcoming election: Israel’s parliamentary electoral system\, the leaders and platforms of the principal parties\, the most recent polling results\, the prospects for forming a leadership coalition\, and the historical context in which Israelis will be exercising their right to select their leaders. \nClick here to register. \nOur speakers are two members of BZBI: \nDr. Shira Hebel Sela is a social psychologist and Kalaniyot Postdoctoral Fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania. Her work focuses on political beliefs\, conflict\, polarization\, and the psychology of how people understand and respond to political information. She completed her Ph.D. at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem\, where she studied political and intergroup attitudes in Israel and other conflict settings. She now continues this work at Penn\, examining how political beliefs are formed and changed. Originally from Israel\, Shira recently moved to Philadelphia with her family\, and her daughter\, Alma\, is in the Blue Room at the BZBI preschool. \nThe Honorable Ramy Djerassi joined BZBI in 1988 and was president from 1997-2001. A graduate of Yale College\, Tulane Law School and Penn’s Fels Center of Government\, he is a judge on Philadelphia’s Orphans’ Court.  Ramy’s parents emigrated to Israel in 1948 from Bulgaria and then moved to the U.S where he was born in Boston in 1957. From 1964 through 1974\, Ramy and family visited cousins and grandparents who lived in Jaffa and Tel Aviv. Ramy remembers pre-1967 Israel fondly and he tries to visit Israel at least once a year. He is a student of Israeli history and politics and he is co-chairing the Current Events and History subcommittee of BZBI’s Israel Engagement Committee.
