SUMMARY:Lag BaOmer with Marni Loffman: Final Concert of the BZBI Jewish Music Series
DESCRIPTION:Join the BZBI community as we celebrate the mystical holiday of Lag BaOmer with the final concert of the BZBI Jewish Music Series. Marni Loffman is an up-and-coming musician whose debut album\, the long short path\, combines elements of Ashkenazi nusach with contemporary American genres including folk\, pop\, jazz\, and neo-soul. Marni writes\, “This album is an invitation to connect from wherever you are on your journey: from a place of eternal wandering and continual arrival\, from the paradox of belief\, from desiring ‘traditional’ sounds and also yearning for relevance and meaning\, from not knowing exactly where you belong\, from recognizing a kernel of truth everywhere but also knowing that no place contains the full picture.”  Register for the concert here. \nThe BZBI Jewish Music Series is thanks to the generous support of Laurie Wagman\, along with sponsor Arlene Fickler and supporters Sheldon & Penny Bernick\, Morton & Carmel Levine\, Lawrence Kerson & Toba Schwaber Kerson\, and Judith Shadden Torrance.  \nThursday\, May 15 at 7:00 PM at BZBI

SUMMARY:Shabbat B'yachad: Where are you having Shabbat Dinner on September 20?
DESCRIPTION:BZBI is re-starting a program that you might want to be a part of. Prior to the pandemic\, BZBI families welcomed other community members into their homes for Shabbat Dinner a few times a year. On September 20\, BZBI Community Members will again open their homes to host fellow congregants for a home hosted Shabbat Dinner. It is a great way to meet other BZBI members and welcome new community members. \nThese periodic dinners offer a great way to meet other congregants and start your own tradition of having Shabbat Dinner with BZBI friends and families. Participating in Shabbat B’yachad is another way to make BZBI the place you want to be\, in your own home or at someone else’s. \nThere will be guidelines for host families to help them facilitate such a meal and participants will also receive guidelines as an attendee. \n\nClick here to become a host for Shabbat B’yachad. \n\n\nClick here if you would like to be a guest of a Shabbat B’yachad hosted dinner. \n\nThe deadline for both forms is Thursday\, September 5. Our matching committee will reach out to all that have signed up with guest and host information ahead of the dinner on September 20.

SUMMARY:BZBI Book Talk with Member Brett Mandel: "Philadelphia\, Corrupt and Consenting"
DESCRIPTION:In a 2020 candidate debate\, President Trump declared\, “Bad things happen in Philadelphia” – and later used the very real truth of Philadelphia corruption to lend credence to the idea that the election was stolen. More than a century after muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens derided the city of Philadelphia as being “corrupt and contented\,” Philadelphia still struggles to rise above this unfortunate characterization. \nIn his book\, Philadelphia\, Corrupt and Consenting (Temple University Press)\, author and BZBI member Brett Mandel tells the story of our city’s confrontation with a history that threatens its future. During this discussion\, Brett will talk about both his book and Philadelphia’s importance in the upcoming national election. Brett Mandel has been a reform-oriented government official and political insider who has exposed and explored Philadelphia’s networks of corruption. Philadelphia\, Corrupt and Consenting provides practical\, achievable policies and actions that can produce positive change in Philadelphia and elsewhere. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase after the presentation. SUMMARY:Shmini Azeret and October 7 Yizkor Memorial with Noa Reuveni
DESCRIPTION:Last year on Shmini Azeret the Jewish people suffered the worst massacre since the Shoah: the October 7 atrocities committed by Hamas. This year\, we mark the yahrzeit of all the lives taken on that dark day with additional memorial prayers as part of our Shmini Azeret Yizkor service. \nIn addition\, BZBI has the privilege of hosting Noa Reuveni that morning. Noa Reuveni is an unexpected activist who grew up in the Gaza Envelope and evolved into a prominent spokesperson after her best friend\, Ziv Berman\, and his twin brother Gali were taken hostage on October 7. Born in Shahar\, Israel\, and having lived in Stockholm\, Sweden\, Noa has confronted antisemitism from both sides: against the Jewish state and the Jewish people. Now\, she engages with thousands globally\, motivating them through universal values of friendship and protection. A former commander in the Israeli Defense Forces\, Noa continues to serve in the reserves while passionately advocating for the hostages. \nNoa will speak to the congregation at the beginning of our October 7 Yizkor Memorial and will also host a Q&A discussion after kiddush. Please join us as our community mourns the Jewish People’s losses\, stands in solidarity with families and friends of the hostages and those who remain missing\, and looks with hope to a better future for Israel and the Jewish people.
