SUMMARY:Who Is Man with Rabbi Stone
DESCRIPTION:“Who Is Man” was the final book written by the eminent Jewish thinker\, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. In the fairly brief work he stated the guiding philosophic insights of his life’s work. Addressed to a general audience while still drawing deeply on Torah sources\, it continues to be a somewhat under appreciated but vital text for our times as well as his. We will review the main points of all six chapters of the book. Rabbi Stone will describe each chapter’s main points\, but folks who want to avail themselves of the original text are encouraged to purchase and read along. \nTo Sign up\, click here.

SUMMARY:Pink Shabbat
DESCRIPTION:Join BZBI for our Pink Shabbat\, a morning service in honor of breast cancer awareness month. We will welcome Emily Schaeffer Bakaj to share her experience.  \nHer story begins with her mother passing away from breast cancer when she was in her early twenties. Helping her through her journey and then living on her own\, changed her as a person to be kinder\, stronger\, more giving\, and open. Support groups\, peer support\, speaking engagements for Sharsheret and being a contributing member of the Fox Chase Cancer Center’s Patient & Faculty Advisory Council (“PFAC”) for six years\, gives her a chance to make a difference. \nIn her day to day\, she is the Facility Manager for the US Region for a global engineering consulting firm. She has been married for 29 years to a wonderful man\, Myron\, and without his support and love\, and the support of friends\, family\, and Fox Chase Cancer Center\, she says she would not be where she is today. \nWe are encouraging everyone to wear pink to this service to show their support of breast cancer awareness. Our Kiddush will feature pink treats in honor of this special month.

SUMMARY:Not Tevia’s Shtetl: The Real Story of our Ancestral Towns and What’s Happening There Today
DESCRIPTION:Jews around the world can trace their roots to small towns in Eastern Europe. Before they made the leap to a big shtot (city) they lived for centuries in shtetls. These places have become shrouded in myth and clouded by memories. Join us for an adventure into the real stories of the towns where our ancestors fell in love\, experienced frustration\, and tried to get ahead. At the end we’ll talk about what remains of these hallowed places and what’s being done to preserve Jewish heritage in places where Jews are absent. We will welcome Zachary Mazur to BZBI for this lecture and Q & A session. \nRegistration is free and there is a suggested $10 donation for the cost of security\, click here to register! \nZachary Mazur earned his PhD at Yale University where he studied under Professor Timothy Snyder. He’s the author of numerous articles and will soon publish a book on Jews\, Ukrainians and Poles in Poland’s economy during the 1920s-30s. He is currently the Senior Historian at the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw.

SUMMARY:Dirshuni: Contemporary Women's Midrash with Rabbi Abe Friedman
DESCRIPTION:Midrash\, one of the fundamental genres of Jewish literature\, came into being almost 2\,000 year ago and was developed and composed by thousands of sages working in parallel – all of whom were men. In our generation\, increased opportunities for women to study and teach led to a renewed interest in composing Midrash. In this series\, we will study selections from Dirshuni\, a two-volume collection of Midrash by contemporary Israeli women\, and explore the ways in which their writings connect with classical Midrash and how women’s voices expand the horizons of Torah. \nClick here to register.

SUMMARY:Roadmap for Justice: POWER Interfaith Convention
DESCRIPTION:Over the last few months\, many Jewish groups have felt disconnected from interfaith allies as we face growing antisemitism and a sense of isolation. Let’s combat that isolation by coming together with partners across lines of faith and race\, fighting for a more just society in Pennsylvania and around the world. Together we will launch our legislative agenda for the 2024-2025 legislative session\, hear from key state lawmakers on how they will champion our agenda\, and create our collective roadmap for justice this year. \nFind out more information here and register here. Buses will be available from Center City.
