SUMMARY:Daily Evening Minyan
DESCRIPTION:Please join us online at BZBI’s daily evening service\, the only Conservative daily Minyan in Center City. In December\, we embarked on a three-month trial period for multi-access (in person + Zoom) weekday minyanim. We are deeply grateful to those BZBI members who made the effort to support this trial by coming in person as well as those who maintained their commitment to Zoom participation in weekday services. \nAfter a careful review of that experience by our Ritual Committee and rabbis\, it is clear that the COVID-19 pandemic remains a significant concern for many stalwart members of our daily minyan community. During the course of our three-month trial\, we were not able to consistently field a minyan in BZBI’s chapel\, and we have decided to pause in-person weekday minyanim for March and April in the hopes that\, a few months further on\, conditions will better allow for resuming minyan in person. The only exception will be the Monday evening minyan\, which will continue in a multi-access format. \nSpecifically\, services will continue with the minor schedule adjustments detailed below\, and there are no changes to Shabbat or Yom Tov service locations or times. Note that on Sundays and civic holidays\, morning minyan takes place at 9:00 AM. \n \n* – Rabbi Mort’s Torah study class continues without change at approximately 8:15 AM after the Monday minyan\, and Rabbi Abe’s “Where Are You” class continues at 8:00 PM on Wednesday before the evening minyan. \nYou can sign up for Zoom access here. \nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email allowing you into all religious services\, including the daily minyan\, Monday Torah Study\, Kabbalat Shabbat\, and Shabbat morning and holiday services. You can download Siddur Sim Shalom\, used for the daily minyan or Shabbat services by going here. \nQuestions? Send a note through our Contact Us form. \n

SUMMARY:Postponed: Rabbi Shim Maslin on God for Grown-ups
DESCRIPTION:Due to unexpected illness\, the last class in this series has been postponed.\n \nNo one\, no matter how brilliant\, saintly or charismatic\, ever has or ever will prove the existence – or non-existence — of God. If the infinite God posited by Judaism since ancient times does\, in fact\, exist\, then that God is by definition beyond human comprehension. \nGod for Grown-ups presents a concept of God as the infinite intelligence of the universe. It avoids any references to God as personal and providential. Following the lead of Baruch Spinoza and Albert Einstein\, the book understands God as the creative force that conceived the world billions of years ago. \nThis course is free but requires registration. You will need a copy of the book\, God for Grown-ups. For those who use Kindle\, it is available on Amazon for less than $4.00. The soft-cover edition is also available on Amazon. Hard cover copies may be ordered from the author for $20.00 each\, by completing a Contact Us form here\, and then to be picked up by individual arrangement. \n\nThis 4 week class is free but we require pre-registration\, and you can sign up here.\nAfter registering\, you will receive a confirmation email with Zoom access information.\n\nQuestions? Send a note through our Contact Us form. \nRemember that BZBI is an AmazonSmile partner and receives 0.5% of the price of eligible smile.amazon.com purchases when this link is used while shopping on the site.  As always\, BZBI appreciates your ongoing\, generous support of our synagogue.

SUMMARY:New Time: The Life & Thought of Mordecai Kaplan
DESCRIPTION:Note new time\, now 30 minutes earlier. \nIn this six week course\, Rabbi Stone will discuss the life\, theology\, and impact on the Jewish community of Mordecai Kaplan\, founder of Reconstructionist Judaism and one of the 20th century’s most prominent Jewish thinkers. \nBorn in tsarist Russia\, he emigrated to the United States at age 8 and attended both Columbia University\, and the Jewish Theological Seminary. His first major book\, Judaism as a Civilization\, contained a detailed criticism of existing Jewish movements and a call for the “reconstruction” of Jewish life. \nIn 1968\, his growing movement opened the Reconstructionist Rabbinic College in Philadelphia as a step toward “an evolving religious civilization.” Kaplan is a strong advocate of cultural and religious pluralism\, and he maintains that American Jews should participate fully and creatively in both Jewish and American civilizations. \nRabbi Stone will engage participants in a review of his work and involved discussions of his impact. The class is free but requires registration. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:Wine & Cheese (and a Little Whiskey?) - Kashrut with Rabbi Abe
DESCRIPTION:When we think of kashrut\, we often think first of meat & milk\, shellfish\, and other “forbidden foods.” Wine and cheese present special cases in the development of kashrut; they offer a window into how the system operates and how halakhah (Jewish practice) evolves over time. We will study sources in chronological order\, culminating with a careful study of how Conservative rabbis today approach questions of Jewish practice. \nThis course is open to students of all backgrounds. Students in this course will meet independently in hevruta pairs to study primary sources (in Hebrew and English translation) and then join in a full group discussion once each week. You are welcome to register together with your hevruta (study partner)\, or register separately and hevruta partners will be matched at the first class meeting. \nThis class requires a separate registration\, and you can register here. The cost for this class is $36 for BZBI members and $50 for the community. We will send an invoice after the second class.  Questions? Send a note through our Contact Us form.

SUMMARY:BZBI-wide Book Club: Upcoming Events
DESCRIPTION:The Book Club is pleased to announce their next book for discussion!  Register once here\, and attend any or all upcoming events.\n \n———- \nApeirogon by Colum McCann\, to be reviewed by Sharon Greis on August 16\, 2021  \n \nBassam Aramin is Palestinian. Rami Elhanan is Israeli. They inhabit a world of conflict that colors every aspect of their daily lives\, from the roads they are allowed to drive on\, to the schools their daughters\, Abir and Smadar\, each attend\, to the checkpoints\, both physical and emotional\, they must negotiate. \nTheir worlds shift irreparably after ten-year-old Abir is killed by a rubber bullet and thirteen-year-old Smadar becomes the victim of suicide bombers. When Bassam and Rami learn of each other’s stories\, they recognize the loss that connects them and they attempt to use their grief as a weapon for peace. \nMcCann crafts Apeirogon out of a universe of fictional and nonfictionalasl material. He crosses centuries and continents\, stitching together time\, art\, history\, nature\, and politics in a tale both heartbreaking and hopeful.
